Freshways Centre - Pegging
Holli is 5 years old and this was her first Big Wide Talk exhibition. I (mum) had been up to the exhibition with other Freshways children so knew what to expect. I told Holli about the farm and the shop and that she could enjoy the different spaces.
Holli had a speech delay and found role play and imaginative situations difficult. We have been encouraging this along with her school, by having her friends home to play and also the school using a bit of time each day in the home area to encourage this. She no longer has a problem with this or her speech.
When we arrived there were not many children in the area. She looked around - had there been more children around, they would have probably copied each other.
It was interesting to see how she worked out how to use a peg, she looked towards Dad for reassurance. This is typical of Holli. She will often look for reassurance from adults. She persevered with the pegs and soon mastered how to do it, and kept continuing to put lots of pegs on one item. This took a long time. When she had run out of pegs or space, she picked up her map and took Daddy to another space. She didn't return to the pegging but she tends not to. When she has completed something at home she normally doesn't return to it. I'm not sure if this is because in her mind it is finished or because she has forgotten about it.
Big Wide Talk: did Holli do anything in the exhibition that surprised you? Did she talk about what she did in the exhibition at home?
Holli didn't really do anything surprising at that time although she has grown in confidence and will try most new experiences presented to her with a bit of reassurance.
She really enjoyed the experience of the exhibition and in fact nearly had a temper tantrum when we had to leave (this is VERY unusual for her, she is a very placid child!).
She spoke about how she enjoyed the shop, using the till, filling the shopping bags with fruit and vegetables and then taking them to the cafe and cutting them up. Holli said, "It got wet, my face, cutting up the fruit." "I liked everything."
