: London Expedition
24 children with a range of aptitudes and attributes took part in Big Wide Walking whilst their parents (mostly mums) participated in the seminar with Ros Hicks, QCA and Polly Toynbee, Guardian. Some children needed one-to-one support on the walk and in all, BWT provided 8 experienced staff. The walk began at the Institute for Materials, Minerals and Mining on Pall Mall and proceeded, via St James' Park, to Parliament Square, across Westminster Bridge and onto the London Eye.
After lunch, the expedition moved along the South Bank and crossed the Millennium Bridge to the final destination, St Paul's, where children were joined by their parents. The walk was a big experience for the children; they were equipped with black fleece capes emblazoned with "Big Wide Walking" and bright orange ribbons and carried 'seeing and shouting' tubes. Maps and six cameras with black and white film were provided.
BWT intends to meet with the participants to document the experience more fully as soon as we can. The documentation will contain an account of the event from these many perspectives, and all proposals arising in the reflective dialogue.
