Whose Economy 2009 - Trailer
Big Wide Talk has demonstrated a way of stimulating deliberative dialogue with the public that can offer purposeful proposals after those taking part have acknowledged difference, conflicts of interest, and the desire for people, and especially their children to have quality of life.
We are now completing a short movie titled 'Whose Economy?’ The movie features the parents who took part in our membership seminar on 10th September last year reflecting on their experiences at the seminar and their lives since. This includes the collapse of Lehman Brothers, RBS and the Fiscal Stimulus, as well as their experiences of the resulting rise in unemployment and on to the 2009 Budget and the debate about the usefulness or otherwise of debt.
We think the footage is compelling because these parents have worked closely with us; they value their opinions, and are prepared even on camera to reach for shared understanding. The point of the movie is not necessarily to offer any kind of fresh insight into the credit crunch but rather to give these women a voice that they almost always do not have, even if they vote. In this sense our work is as relevant to Climate Change as it is to children's services or any other area of government policy. ‘
Whose Economy?’ attempts to weave together reflections from our parents with archive footage including BBC news coverage of the period in question and the UK Government account - mostly policy statements from the Prime Minister and the Chancellor.
